Appreciation of the arts is something that should be fostered from an early age. One of the benefits of an education at St John’s School is that alongside the excellent generalist teachers, who teach a number of different subjects with expertise in their own right, our pupils are further inspired by a number of subject specialists. It is little understood that this is one of the advantages of a school going up to 16.
Central to the school is our delightful chapel, not only the setting for assemblies and services, but also for more formal occasions such as Carols by Candlelight, led by the school choir.
Some of the older pupils are excellent musicians and recently, there were no fewer than three organ scholars and several grade 8 pianists. St John’s is proud to have seen many of its carefully nurtured musicians win scholarships, many have chalked up examination successes, but more importantly, still more have gone on to enjoy the continuation of this interest at secondary school and at university.
Opportunities for performance in our theatre abound. Drama is a particularly popular component of the curriculum, many pupils extend this by participating in the productions of the drama club.
A cottage next to the main school building is the base for much of the creative art work, glimpses of which can be seen around the school.
