Intensive English Course
An individualised programme offering the chance to improve English language skills in a supportive small group environment.
The ISC offers students the opportunity to focus intensively on their language skills in a

course that includes a small number of iGCSE subjects alongside a majority of English language lessons. Those with beginner or lower levels of English have the opportunity to develop their English aside from the pressure of a fully integrated curriculum. Intermediate students benefit from the thorough grammatical overview and orientation of vocabulary towards academic subjects.
The small group environment facilitates a personalised curriculum based around the needs of the individual student. Discussion, role play, focus on key skills and active learning approaches all play an integrated part of the course. These enable students to engage with the processes of their learning and build on the four foundations of language: reading, writing, speaking and listening. Themed investigations, project work and related field trips offer the chance for a deeper exploration of a particular area.
ISC students periodically collaborate with other international students for specific activities. This year our ‘Idioms Competition’ celebrated the idiosyncracies of the English language and students competed to produce the best short story using idiomatic expressions. In the winter term, years 9, 10 and ISC students collaborated to produce an internal newsletter ‘Christmas Comparisons’, comparing Christmas celebrations across the world.
