I would like to wish everyone a very warm welcome into our Boarding community at St. John’s School, as we reopen boarding for the new academic year of 2021-2022. I am thrilled to be able to welcome students back into boarding and am looking forward to meeting the St. John’s families as we commence the new school year.
My family will be living onsite in the boarding house. I will be in charge of the boarding house, as Head of Boarding, whilst my wife, Laura, will play a supporting role in the boarding team and will also be teaching Year 1. We have two daughters, Iris (5) and Dorothy (2) who will be living onsite with us and attending school at St. Johns from September. We plan to create a family atmosphere in boarding by aiming to create a home-from-home experience for the students in the boarding house. We want a safe, happy environment that welcomes students from all nationalities, religions and cultures into our large family here at St. Johns.
Over the past year the Boarding house has been closed which has allowed time for renovation and we are pleased to have newly decorated bathrooms, along with completion of a Boarders’ Common Room. I hope we can give you a tour in person, and if this is not possible, we will provide you with a virtual tour of our accommodation. Boarding pupils will have access to the fantastic school facilities throughout the evenings and weekends and they are encouraged to join in all aspects of school life, such as (but not limited to): music, drama and sport. There will also be the opportunity to participate in a wide selection of clubs, both in school and local clubs in the community. Sidmouth has excellent rugby, hockey, football, cricket and swimming clubs.
Boarders are expected to work hard with their academic studies and this is balanced with a varied selection of activities throughout the school year. They will enjoy supervised trips that are organised at weekends for pupil’s to take full advantage of the activities available in the local area. St. John’s is lucky to have an incredible location on the World Heritage Jurassic Coast which will also give plenty of opportunities for pupils to visit the beach and the surrounding area of the South West of England.
“Communication is key!” One of my mottos… Communication will be a key priority and I will ensure that there is a direct communication flow throughout the term with photos, newsletters, social media and blog pages so that parents can see what is happening in boarding life at St. Johns. I am also at the end of a phone (07591385258 – school boarding duty telephone) or email (email@example.com), so if you have any questions or queries then please do not hesitate to contact me.
In September I intend to spend a lot of time getting to know the children and will ensure that they are well settled into their new environment. It is going to be important for me to find out each individual child’s interests and to understand their character and personality. This will build throughout the course of the academic year and will allow the opportunity for support to be given, when needed, and success to be recognised and celebrated.
I am very much looking forward to meeting all our boarding families over the months ahead and welcoming you into our boarding community.
