Our Nursery caters for 2.5 year olds to 4 year olds, 8am to 5pm, term time only. Nursery is based in secure, separate buildings within the grounds of St John’s School with our own safe outdoor play area. Our Nursery Team consists of a Nursery Manager, full time Teacher (with Master’s degree in Early Education), as well as a Teaching Assistant. This highly experienced and motivated team is supplemented by St John’s School PE, Swimming, Art, Music and Spanish teachers, who provide age-appropriate learning along with the start of a learning programme which can extend seamlessly through to IGCSE and beyond. We are far more than a child –minding centre, and make up an integral part of St John’s School.
As part of the school, we are lucky enough to be able to enjoy all the school facilities including the sports hall, the extensive playing fields, dining hall, an extensive woodland and ecological area, in addition to a heated indoor/outdoor swimming pool, This allows swim classes 12 months of the year, which we consider essential with so many water hazards and amenities in the local area. Older children from the school often help within Nursery and this contributes to a smooth transition for those moving through to ‘big school’ in Reception at St John’s, which we would hope to be the majority! There is also a constant interaction between Nursery, Reception and Year 1, the sharing of resources in addition to Team Teaching, so that all children benefit from our staff’s skills, enthusiasm and professionalism.
As well as a package of comprehensive care throughout the day, children receive a mid-morning snack, a healthy lunch (taken in the main school dining room) and a light tea in the afternoon. There is a small charge for lunch in the Nursery or you can bring a packed lunch for your child.
St John´s Nursery is subject to Independent School Inspections on a regular basis and receives glowing praise for the academic and pastoral support, along with the opportunity to enjoy the excellent school facilities.
Our Nursery follows the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) and our own method of inquiry based learning which allows us to create an environment that encourages children to inquire, explore, question, investigate, create, imagine and most importantly have fun!
Our children are encouraged to learn through play and exploration, making full use of our activity room, craft and messy play areas, outside area and the wider school grounds.
We are also lucky enough to have Spanish, Music, PE and Swimming every week too. We plan activities using solely our children’s interests and skills meaning that we really get to know our children and allow them to be in control of their learning.
This allows the children to develop as individuals and encourage positive relationships with both their peers and our Early Years team. We also work closely with the Reception class which means a smoother transition when it is time for ‘big school.’
We encourage parents to come into Nursery, to see our facilities and discuss the needs of their children. Children join us for taster sessions before joining Nursery and these can take place at any point during the term. We welcome the opportunity to show parents and children what Nursery Life is really like.
